¶ Refinement Guide
Refinement allows players to improve their equipment in BGS Classic.
Refinement is an important part of long-term character progression, but it also carries risk depending on the equipment and refinement attempt.
⚡ BGS Modified: BGS uses a customized refinement system. Refinement fees, success rates, protection mechanics and bonuses may differ from standard Ragnarok Online.
¶ Before Refining
Before attempting a refinement, consider:
- The equipment's value
- How long you expect to use the equipment
- The benefit gained from the refinement
- The cost of attempting the refinement
- The possibility of failure
- Whether refinement protection is available
Do not refine equipment simply because you have the materials.

BGS uses different materials depending on the equipment being refined.

¶ Refinement Risk
Refinement attempts may fail.
Depending on the equipment and refinement level, an unsuccessful attempt may result in consequences such as:
- Refinement level reduction
- Loss of refinement progress
- Equipment breaking
Always understand the risk before attempting an unsafe refinement.
¶ Refinement Protection Scroll
BGS uses a Refinement Protection Scroll for unsafe refinement attempts.
When the required scroll is present during an applicable refinement attempt, it protects the equipment from breaking.
The scroll does not guarantee refinement success.
If the refinement attempt fails, the equipment refinement level is reduced by 2.
The Refinement Protection Scroll is consumed when an unsafe refinement attempt is made, regardless of whether the refinement succeeds or fails.
¶ Refinement Bonuses
BGS includes additional bonuses tied to equipment refinement.
When the required equipment pieces reach the applicable refinement level, additional bonuses may be granted.
Current documented bonuses include:

These bonuses are not additive.
Additional refinement bonuses may be introduced in future updates.
¶ Refinement Strategy
Do not automatically refine every piece of equipment to the highest possible level.
Consider:

Higher-value equipment may justify additional investment.
¶ Equipment Longevity
A temporary item may not be worth heavily refining.
¶ Character Progression
Consider whether the refinement provides a meaningful improvement to your current build.
¶ Available Zeny
Keep enough Zeny for consumables, cards, equipment and other progression expenses.

Refinement can be especially useful when:
- You expect to use the equipment for a long time.
- The equipment is an important part of your build.
- The refinement provides a meaningful improvement.
- You have enough Zeny to absorb a failed attempt.
- You understand the current refinement risks.

Refinement should be considered part of your overall equipment progression.

→ Add important character bonuses

→ Begin investing into equipment you expect to keep
